Nobuko's Story

I 've worked in the entertainment industry. I was trained as a ballet dancer, worked in films and Broadway as well.

At that time, people didn't call -- we didn't call ourselves Asian-American. People called us Orientals. There was still a very limited amount of kinds of jobs that were available to Asian-American citizens. I bumped into many walls.

So I began singing. Then I began writing music and connected with other people who were part of the Asian-American awakening. And there I met Asian-Americans who were involved in activities against the Viet Nam war.

01. For the first time I stepped outside of my own desire, my own ambition, and started looking at the world.

We realized the power of music and the fact that Asian-Americans had never had a musical voice, and it started us on a journey.

As an elder now, you have to look at yourself as an elder, we're sort of the memory and we're passing on what we've lived through to others.
