Sarah's Story

When I was 5 years old I started dancing. And my mother had promised me that I could take classes. When I was 6 I had polio and after a long recovery time, I was able to walk with some equipment but I could not dance.

When I was in the sixth grade, my family moved to St. Louis. So I went to the new school, and the first day, I went and I sat up in the front of the class because that’s where I liked to sit. And the teacher came in and she looked at me and she said would you come up to my desk? And so I walked up to my desk, and she said, now, give me your crutches. So I gave her my crutches. And she said, now walk back to your desk. And I said, I can’t do that. And she said, you don’t belong here.

And when I spoke to my parents and told them what had happened, they said to me, they’re wrong. You belong. You belong anywhere you want to go.

[When I retired from teaching when I was 62,] I read an article in the paper, and they were asking for people to come to audition who were wheel chair dancers. No experience required.
