Charlie's Story
I am the director of crane maintenance at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. Been married for 32 years, the father of two children.
If you had talked to my wife or my kids, they would tell you very much daddy was a disciplinarian. There was only one way to things- his way. There was no give and take
no tolerance for anything but the right reaction. Things had to be done right the first time.
I had a hard time understanding my son and his values. My son's 29 years old and I swear there's not a square inch of his body that does not have a tattoo on it. My wife reminded me that it took me more than a year or two for me to come to terms with my father.
Just because he's not doing things my way doesn't make it the wrong way. It's taken me a long time to come to terms with that.
The fact that he is an adult, functioning as an adult, paying his own way thrills me to death. It took the experience of challenging myself to see that.
My son tried to remind me that he's more hard-headed than I am. I said, no son, I am the master. |
