On the evening of September 3, "Saint Roses float" is carried through Viterbo. .
The first float, which may have evolved from a processional canopy, dates back to 1664. It was created to fulfil a vow made by the inhabitants of Viterbo during the terrible epidemic of 1657. Now this tower-like structure is built of metal, wood and pasteboard and can be over 20 meters high. It weighs more than three tons and is covered with hundreds of lights. It is carried on the shoulders of 80 men, called facchini, who are recruited by means of a special test of strength. Each potential bearer must carry a 150 kg load on his shoulders for three circuits around a track inside the Church of Peace, which was deconsecrated in the 18th century. The float, which is taller than any building in town, is set down several times during the procession, and there are four rest stops before the bearers arrive at the bottom of the steep hill and climb the final 100 meters to the Church of Saint Rose. When they reach the top, they are awarded with enthusiastic applause and warm embraces. |
