Marina Garrido Monteiro was born in São Paulo, Brazil, on November 25, 1932. She belongs to a family of musicians and she herself plays the piano. She has happy memories of her childhood, as we can see from her testimony (in 1992):
"The entire neighborhood was lovely, really lovely. We never had any problems that I can recall -- my mother and the neighbors, never. Everyone had lots of friends. I went to Aclimação School, and it was wonderful. I have a friend that I've always stayed in touch with. I'm fifty-nine now, and we've been friends since we were four. And I'm still in touch with a group of friends that I've known since secondary school, when I was eleven. We don't visit each other often, but we talk on the phone, and if there's ever a problem, we discuss it among ourselves and support each other. As I told you, thank God, I have always been surrounded by people, really lovely people. So I don't mind not having a brother or a sister, not at all..."
