Sergio Picchiarini was born in Bagni di Lucca, Italy, on October 8, 1934. His grandparents and father were mechanics. In 1953, he immigrated to São Paulo, Brazil, to finish his studies. He got a job as waiter in several restaurants. In 1970 he created the Confeitaria Piatto D'Oro, a store in the Iguatemi Shopping Center, which he managed until 1985. Today he has his own restaurant, the Ristorante e Rosticceria Piatto D'Oro.

Here is a part of Sergio's testimony about meeting his wife:
 
"From then on, I always...I was older and she was still in school..., we used to see each other...and, I don't know, I think she was favorably impressed with me, I guess. She told me she had a thing for me since she first saw me in Santos and she said to herself: "I want this guy !" And maybe that's why she's got (me)."
