Hana is a Jew who was born in 1919, in Soroki, Bessarabia, today part of Romania. She and her sister immigrated to Brazil in 1935, joining their brothers who were already living there. Hana was married in 1945 and used to work with books. Today, she is 78 and lives in Rio de Janeiro.
"My name is Hana. My brothers were Velvel, Barech, Rosa, Dvoire, Dudl, Manea, Siuca, and Sioma. They were named after relatives who had passed away, because that was the tradition. I was born in 1919, in Soroki, Bessarabia, then part of Romania.
At that time I met a wealthy Jew, whose name was Baron. He would pass by my home every day. Sometimes we had lunch together (...). He had a thing for me.
Baron wanted to marry me, but my sister, who was a bit older, was supposed to marry first. I was cute, and all the guys who met her fell in love with me. So the family hid me where no one would see me. When my sister was engaged, I came back. But it happened again. Her fiancÚ saw me (...)
That's why I was sent to Brazil to join my other sister who was already living here with her husband and children."
