3 - ENCOURAGING INTERACTION BETWEEN LIVING BEINGS
For some time now, modern science has examined ecological connections, notably the relationship between prey and predator. The 250-million-year-old chemical and genetic war between plants and insects is starting to reveal its secrets. This information can be used to increase production and decrease the loss of crops to predators without the need for industrial pesticides.
The gardener can promote the reproduction and development of biological allies which help to limit the proliferation of pests.
This is an example of using nature without causing harm, learning from both traditional methods and the most recent scientific findings. Careful observation of natural environments teaches us what to do, and shows us often simple ways to exploit the antagonism and the alliances between organisms. |
