Judaism, Christianity and Islam are the three revealed, monotheistic religions. All three were conceived and revealed at a specific time by an identifiable individual who reformed current religious practice. Monotheism is what unites Christians, Muslims and Jews, and also what divides them.

Jews are often called the People of the Book. God conveyed His Law to Moses on Mount Sinai, and Moses transcribed it in five books or scrolls. These five texts are called the Torah in Hebrew and the Pentateuch in Greek.

Derived from Judaism, Christianity was founded by Jesus, the Son of God, God incarnate, come to earth to save humanity from original sin. His sermons are captured in a set of texts, testimonies of the faith of his disciples, called the New Testament. Around 200 A.D., the New Testament and the Scriptures, also known as the Old Testament, were assembled in a single book: the Bible.

The Muslims believe that Allah spoke in Arabic to the prophet Mohammed, completing the revelation previously conveyed by Abraham, Moses and Jesus. God’s message to Mohammed constitutes the Koran, making it the Word incarnate and Arabic a holy language.

Château de Bon-Repos, Jarrie (Isère)
Collection of the Musée Dauphinois

The Chateau de Bon-Repos was built in the latter half of the 15th century by the Armuets, a family who belonged to the noblesse de robe, nobility acquired by performing judicatory duties. Its chapel was once decorated with classic scenes of devotion, popular at the time: Saint Christopher crossing the waves, the Pieta, the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian, etc. The two painted doors in our collection covered a Nativity located above the altar. They depict Jacob surrounded by seven of his twelve sons. The patriarchs, in a complex arrangement full of symbolic meaning, prophesy the coming of the Messiah and the Virgin. Isolated off to the right, Dan is depicted as the monstrous ancestor of the tribe of Israel from which will come the Antichrist at the end of time.
